Frequently Asked Questions

We get lots of questions here at TF Central, and here are the answers we felt like putting up on the website...
Q. How do I change something about my listing? I want to change the rating/category/URL/site details. How do I do that?
A. We try to do our best to put sites in the place where they will be found the most easily and visited, but even we screw up occasionally and we know that the web is a fast-paced place. To change your description and keywords, it's simple, just go to the Change Site Info page, and follow the instructions. For anything else, use our "Broken Links?" page.
Q. What's the difference between the red and white links?
A. It's a handy visual clue to tell whether a link may have objectionable content on it (R, X and NR sites). I included NR in this category because it's quite possible that a site that has not been rated has objectionable content in it...

Q. Why do you have both "Site Updates" and "Recently Added"? Isn't that redundant?
A. Not really. "Site Updates" refers to external sites on the linklist updating, while "Recently Added" is a brand new site on the linklist. If Catgirl-O-Rama updates with 17 new pictures, it would go on the "Site Updates" page. If we added Maestro's Page of the Mildly Inane to the TF Central database, it would automatically appear on the "Recently Added" page for 10 days. If you wish to announce an update on your site, just hit our site update page.

Q. In the category listings, it says there are more sites than I can see on the screen. What gives?
A. Did you visit our content filter to filter out offensive sites? If so, that's the problem. TF Central currently only shows you the total sites in a category.

Q. Oops! I made a mistake putting a site update, media alert or announcement! how can I fix it? Should I just make a new one?
A. You should contact the TF Central staff on the Contact TF Central page and we will correct the error.

Q.

Who decides where a link goes in the database? My site fits in 5 categories but you only have me in one or two. What gives?
A. When you submit a link to TF Central, it doesn't automatically get put in the database, it's actually put in by hand. This is the same thing Yahoo! does to prevent the links from getting too messy. It takes some time to get links up, but it's never very long. We reserve the right on where exactly to put your link. We make our best efforts to categorize like with like for ease of finding sites you would enjoy. SomeFur's Page of One Story and One Drawing may be both art and literature sites, but fits content-wise best with the personal sites. That's a call to be made by TF Central staff. We'll definitely listen if you think you're in the wrong place.

Q. What's with all the site ID crap? Can't I just type in my URL for a site update? Why does it have to be in the database??
A. Welcome to the wonderful world of databases. It's actually a convenience for you and for those that visit the site (as well as the poor database server). The number code is an ID that contains the URL of the site, so there are never any mistakes in entering the URL countless times and as the URL changes, it changes the alert automatically. Plus, it's easier to remember a number than a whole name and URL.

Q. When will you start archiving pictures? Why just links?
A. We will never put up pictures. There are gigabytes of TF pictures out there, and they'd all have to stay on this server. Second, I have a limited amount of transfer on this server. Graphics are HUGE compared to text. You'll notice there are about 8 or so graphics on this whole site and a common CSS file. Second, it must be pointed out that it's silly to replicate all the TF pictures in the world because they are on the Internet ALREADY. Better just to link to them all. That's the entire reasoning behind this site.

Q. Why did my site get an R or X rating? All I have is a couple of nudes and the gallery says "Adult" on it, but most of the artwork is enough to be rated PG. That's enough to be a PG site, right?
A. Uh... according to our ratings guide rear nudity and bare breasts gets an R rating, full-frontal nudity gets an X. Just putting "Adult" on a gallery doesn't suddenly sanitize your site any more than putting a "Minors not admitted" sign on a strip club will allow you to set it up in a school zone. If you are going to put up R rated material, you will get an R rating. The point of the rating system, after all, is to let people avoid that sort of thing.
Q. I don't want to be listed on this site. How can I get removed from the database entirely?
A. Use either the "Contact TF Central" at the top of this, or any other, page. Please be sure to write in the comments that you wish your site taken down and why. Please use a valid E-mail address, as we wish to confirm the deletion (so others don't remove sites that are not theirs). We will try to take it down ASAP after confirmation.

Q. Please remove this site from your database, even though it is not mine. I find it quite offensive.
A. If you are simply offended by a site (eg. a bestiality site) TF Central will not remove the site unless asked to by the owner of the site or the server the site is on. TF Central is simply a resource, and as such, we'd rather not censor any links that may be of value to some people. If you wish to filter out unwanted content, please look at our "Content Filter" page. We will try to keep offensive and controversial pages rated R or X.

Q. I've submitted my furry site about 6 times already and it's not listed. What gives?
A. If those 6 times were all in the same day, hold your horses! We do look at all the additions, but we also visit them to make sure the link is working, decide what category to put them in, give them a rating and record other information for searching purposes. It's not an instant thing. Secondly, your site may not be within the bounds of the site. This is a TF site, not furry, not transvestite, not porn, not job postings. We will definitely be liberal about this, as TF is a very diffuse interest and not well defined. The TF Central staff is the final arbiter of who does and who does not get on TF Central,  but if it has ANYTHING to do with TF, it belongs here.

Q. On your search page it would be better if you had an "otters" or "horses" category or at least just a "mammals" category to make the searching better.
A. It would not make things as easy as you think. First of all, the search page would get huge as every little facet of every interest got a box on the page. Second, it would be difficult to categorize the sites and putting new sites in would take even longer. Use the "Keywords" box to search through the site's description and keywords.

Q. I heard the site was pretty good-looking, but it's pretty drab, all the links are the standard font, can't you spruce it up a bit?
A. Probably because your browser doesn't support CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). Without a doubt, the site looks best in Internet Explorer 4/5 and looks good in Netscape 4 and IE3. It's definitely readable in Netscape 3 and lower and is even readable in text-based browsers. My reasons for this are that something like 88% of the traffic I am getting on this server is using Netscape 4.x and IE4+, plus CSS has been incorporated into HTML 4.0 to replace the <font> tag. If you find a part of this site that is broken on your browser, please contact us via the "Contact TF Central" link at the top of the page.

Q. I was offended by one of the phrases at the top of one of the pages. Please remove it.
A. Uh... sorry you were offended... If it bothers you that much, hit the reload button at the top of your browser window. It will change to something else. All of the phrases are supposed to be sarcastic humor (or at least partially funny) but are mostly harmless. You can leave a rant for us at the "Contact TF Central" page if it's really that important to you.

Q. How do you pronounce "FAQ"?
A. Usually like "fack", as in "just the faqs ma'am". My boss likes to pronounce it "fah-queue". He's from new York, though.

Q. Why the heck is everything black?
A. I happen to like the Goth/Industrial esthetic and music. This site was coded listening to bands like Luxt, Decoded Feedback, Evils Toy, Covenant, Funker Vogt and Velvet Acid Christ. That's also why I used the Morpheus font in the graphics on this site. So there.
