Oscuro dramma psicologico e familiare, il soggetto di Peckinpah e David Zelag Goodman e' basato sulla novella The Siege of Trencher's Farm di Gordon Williams. Molto controverso, il film colpisce per la sua violenta conclusione e per la complessa scena dello stupro . Realizzato nello stesso anno di "A Clockwork Orange" "The French Connection" e "Dirty Harry" , il film ha suscitato accese polemiche a causa della percezione di una escalation della violenza nel cinema. E' comunque considerato uno dei migliori film di Peckinpah's. Storia: David Sumner (Dustin Hoffman), un timido matematico americano, lascia il caos del college durante i tempi della protesta studentesca contro la guerra ,per vivere con sua moglie Amy (Susan George) nel suo villaggio natio in Cornovaglia. Quasi immediatamente, nasce tensione nella coppia poiche' David si immerge nel lavoro accademico mentre quasi ignora Amy. Cercando attenzione, Amy inizia e flirtare con alcuni operai del villaggio (Jim Norton, Peter Vaughan, Ken Hutchison, Donald Webster) che stanno eseguindo riparazioni della isolata fattoria della coppia. Uno di questi , Charlie Venner (Del Henney), era stato il primo amore di Amy. L'atteggiamento di Amy e la riservatezza intellettuale di David creano risentimento nel paese, e qualcuno comincia a molestarli. David scopre il loro gatto strangolato ed appeso alla catena del gabinetto. Amy lo sollecita a confrontarsi con gli abitanti del villaggio, ma lui si rifiuta. David tenta invece di guadagnarsi la loro amicizia , e loro lo invitano a caccia nel bosco. Gli operai lo portano in una lontana foresta e lo lasciano li' dicendogli che spingeranno gli ucceli verso di lui. Charlie Venner ritorna invece alla fattoria dove si confronta con Amy. La picchia e la violenta. Un secondo operaio arriva e forza Venner , con la minaccia di un fucile, a tenere ferma la donna mentre la violenta anche lui. Dopo molte ore , David realizza di essere stato giocato e ritorna. Lei non racconta dello stupro da parte dei due uomini. La settimana successiva David e Amy , urtano incidentalmente con l'auto l'idiota del villaggio , Henry Niles (David Warner). Essi portano il ferito alla loro casa e David chiama telefona al Pub del villaggio per parlare dell'incidente. Ma David non sa che l'uomo , nel pomeriggio , ha strangolato una ragazza , e gli uomini del villaggio lo stanno cercando. La telefonata li avverte quindi di dove si trova Niles. Presto i locali ubriachi , inclusi gli uomini che hanno violentato Amy, arrivano alla casa di David. David rifiuta di consegnare loro Niles ed essi tentano di entrare in casa con violenza. Forzato all'azione in difesa della sua casa e di sua moglie, David esplode in una crescendo di rabbia, che lo porta ad uccidere tutti gli attaccanti.

Story: David Sumner (Dustin Hoffman), a timid American mathematician, leaves the chaos of college anti-war protests to live with his young wife Amy (Susan George) in her native village in Cornwall, England. Almost immediately, there is tension between the couple as David becomes immersed in his academic work while ignoring Amy. Craving attention, Amy begins to flirt with several of the burly town locals (Jim Norton, Peter Vaughan, Ken Hutchison, Donald Webster) doing repair work on the couple's isolated farmhouse. One of these locals is Amy's former lover Charlie Venner (Del Henney). Amy's flirtations and David's intellectual reserve create resentment, and the workmen begin to subtly taunt and harass them. David discovers their pet cat strangled and hanging by a light chain in their bedroom closet. Amy claims the workmen did it to prove they could get into their bedroom and to intimidate David. She presses him to confront the villagers, but he refuses. David tries to win their friendship, and they invite him to go hunting in the woods the next day. During the hunting trip, the workmen take him to a remote forest meadow and leave him there with the promise they will drive the birds towards him. Having ditched David, Charlie Venner returns to the couple's farmhouse where he confronts Amy. He beats her and rapes her. A second villager arrives and forces Venner by shotgun to hold Amy down while he rapes her. After several hours, David realizes he's been tricked and returns home to find a disheveled and withdrawn Amy. She does not tell him about the gang rape. Later that week, they attend a church social where Amy becomes distraught after seeing the men who raped her. David and Amy leave the social early and while driving home accidentally hit the village idiot Henry Niles (David Warner). They take the injured Niles to their home and David calls the town pub about the accident. Unbeknownst to him, earlier that evening Niles strangled a young girl from the village, and now the workmen are looking for Niles. The phone call alerts them to Niles' whereabouts. Soon the drunken locals, including the men who raped Amy, are pounding on the door of the Sumner's home. David refuses to hand Niles over to the mob and they attempt to break in to the house. Forced into action in defense of his home, David embarks on an uncharacteristic spree of violence, descending into a murderous rage, violently murdering all the attackers.
