Surrealism as a formal art movement began in the early 20th Century. But surrealism has always been a part of art--arent the Paleolithic cave paintings found in France and Spain surreal? and the Venus of Willendorf, with its grotesque folds of flesh? One can argue that reality is much too mysterious and complex for realism to adequately capture. GyP (self-portrait, left)--is an Italian artist and software programmer whose imagination roams delightfully into ethereal realms. Using his computer, he takes the ordinary and makes it extraordinary.
